The whole life1818–1820
Meets and befriends Delacroix
In Paris the young painter met and befriended Eugène Delacroix. By Delacroix’s own recollection, he first met Bonington around 1816 or 1817, when he himself was very young and was making studies in the Louvre.
1818–1820
Copies Dutch and Flemish masters in the Louvre
For a time he made copies in the Louvre of paintings by the old Dutch and Flemish masters.
1820
École des Beaux-Arts: pupil of Baron Gros
He began attending the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Antoine-Jean Gros.
c. 1820
Sketching tours around Paris
Around the same time he began making sketching tours in the suburbs of Paris and the surrounding countryside.
1822
First works at the Paris Salon
His first two Normandy watercolours were shown at the Paris Salon of 1822.
1822–1824
Takes up oil painting and lithography
He began working in oils and took up lithography, illustrating Baron Taylor’s Voyages pittoresques dans l’ancienne France and producing his own architectural series, Restes et Fragmens.
