The occupation years: “La Gerbe” and accusations of collaboration
From the start of the occupation he published in the weekly “La Gerbe,” kept up friendships with Arno Breker and Leni Riefenstahl, and saw five new plays staged in Paris theatres. Resistance fighters accused him of collaboration, but he escaped censure after the Liberation, though he never repented of his sympathies for the Germans.
