The whole life1977–1989
Five Whitney Biennials
His work appears at the Whitney Biennial in 1977, 1981, 1983, 1987 and 1989.
1979–1996
Professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy
From 1979 to 1996 he is a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf; another account calls him its chairman from 1979.
1984
Takes part in the Venice Biennale
His work is shown at the 1984 Venice Biennale; in 1993 he returns to the German pavilion.

Returns to South Korea
After nearly 35 years of exile from his homeland he returns to South Korea. From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s he plays an integral role in Korea’s art scene: he organizes exhibitions, introduces Cage, Cunningham and Beuys to the public, helps bring the 1993 Whitney Biennial to Seoul and takes part in founding the Gwangju Biennale and the Korea Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
