Returns to Denmark as portraitist to the royal house
In 1780, after eight years abroad, Juel returned to Denmark and at home painted the well-known picture “The Poet of the Messiah” (Messiadens Digter). In Copenhagen he became the portraitist of the royal house and of many aristocratic patrons.

Unanimously elected a member of the Academy
On 4 April 1782 Juel was unanimously elected a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Becomes director of the Academy
In 1795 Juel became director of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and remained in the post until his death.
