    Major Official Commissions for Versailles

    He received major commissions for the decoration of the apartments of Versailles: The Royal Virtues (1735) in the Queen's chamber, hunting scenes for the Petits Appartements (1736), Venus and Vulcan (1747) in the Dauphin's apartments, and History for the Royal Library (1743–1746).

  3. 1755

    Inspector of the Royal Gobelins Manufactory

    After the death of Jean-Baptiste Oudry he became inspector of the Royal Gobelins Manufactory, where he executed the cartoons for the famous tapestry series The Loves of the Gods.

  4. 1765

    Director of the Academy and First Painter to the King

    He became director of the Royal Academy and succeeded Charles Van Loo as First Painter to King Louis XV — the summit of his official career.
