Leaves to study in Italy
His parents wanted their son to become a naval officer, but he cared only for drawing and painting, and he went to study art in Italy. The Italian years (1859–1866) were important for the development of his historical style; his early work consisted of rural scenes of everyday life.

Hans Christian Andersen writes Bloch a New Year's letter
In a New Year's letter, Hans Christian Andersen tells the painter that what God has arched on solid rock will not be swept away. In another letter he writes that Bloch's art adds a new step to his Jacob's ladder into immortality.
