  2. 1870s

    A hereditary neurological illness worsens

Against the background of a personal crisis tied to his love for Rose La Touche, Ruskin's hereditary neurological disorder (CADASIL syndrome) worsens in the 1870s.

    Post: master

  4. 1874–1875

Undergraduates with spades: the North Hinksey road

In 1874 Ruskin instigates a road-mending scheme on Ferry Hinksey Road at North Hinksey, near Oxford, involving undergraduates, partly to teach the virtues of wholesome manual labour; continuing into 1875, it enrages the University authorities, spectators and the national press. Among the diggers are Oscar Wilde, Alfred Milner and Ruskin's future secretary and biographer W. G. Collingwood.

  5. 1875

The death of Rose La Touche

Three years after her parents' final refusal, Rose La Touche dies of an unknown cause.

  6. 1879

    Resigns his Oxford chair

In 1879 Ruskin resigns from Oxford, a decision forced on him partly by his declining health and finally precipitated by the Whistler trial.
