Многочисленные штудийные рисунки Шишкина также представляют интерес. Их обилие говорит о страсти Шишкина переносить на бумагу отдельные природные объекты. Работая над рисунком, художник всякий раз делал открытие, изобретая прием, которым можно изобразить кору сосны или дуба, ветви с листвой, устланную мхом поверхность земли и т. д. Как в живописи можно различить вблизи только пятна и мазки, так и в штудийных рисунках Шишкина вблизи мы наблюдаем калейдоскоп хаотичных или систематизированных штрихов и коротких линий. И только при рассматривании с определенного расстояния рисунки поражают иллюзорной реальностью и убедительностью изображенных натурных объектов. При этом в них нет ничего от холодного бездушного натурализма. Портретируя предмет, Шишкин познавал его строение. И как в портрете художник запечатлевает не только модель, но и себя тоже, так и шишкинские штудии становились очеловеченными.

  1. 1864–1865

    Düsseldorf

    He moved to Düsseldorf and attended the Düsseldorf art school; his pen drawings were placed in the Düsseldorf museum alongside works by Achenbach and Lessing.

  2. 1865

    Title of Academician

    For "View in the Environs of Düsseldorf," painted in Düsseldorf on commission from the collector N. Bykov, the Imperial Academy of Arts conferred on Shishkin the title of academician.

  3. 1866

    Return to Russia

    Homesick, he returned to St. Petersburg before his fellowship term expired; that same year his painting "Air" and six drawings were exhibited in Moscow.

  4. 1867

    World's Fair in Paris

    At the 1867 Exposition Universelle he showed several drawings and the painting "View in the Environs of Düsseldorf."

  5. 1868

    A Professorship Replaced by an Order

    The Academy of Arts awarded Shishkin the title of professor for the paintings "Pine Forest" and "Rather than Cross the Bridge, Let Us Look for a Ford," but the Academy's president, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, instead decorated the artist with the Order of St. Stanislaus, 3rd class.

  6. 28 October 1868

    Marriage to Evgenia Vasilyeva

    He married Evgenia Alexandrovna Vasilyeva, sister of the landscape painter Fyodor Vasilyev; the marriage produced sons Vladimir and Konstantin, who died in infancy, and a daughter, Lidia.
