About the work

Illustration in pen and black ink captioned 'Volunteer Tournament at Crystal Palace, Saturday afternoon'. It shows four different events, amongst which are a 'Cyclist's obstacle race' and 'The Dressing and Equipment Competition'.

Pencil annotation of the rear of the illustration indicates that it was created by the artist A.J.Finberg (1866-1939). The sketch is not dated but is likely to date from the late nineteenth century.

This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. In this instance most probably The Penny Illustrated Paper. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
