Лето 1908 года Любовь Попова провела в имении родителей Красновидово. В тот год у нее гостила подруга – Людмила Прудковская, сестра Надежды Прудковской, в будущем известной художницы Удальцовой. Любовь Попова и сестры Прудковские были в то время ученицами в Школе рисования и живописи К.Ф. Юона и И.О. Дудина. Школа Юона давала твердые основы реалистической фиксации натуры в рисунке и цвете и приучала к некоторой свободе выражения в духе московского импрессионизма.

В отличие от многих рисунков, сделанных молодой художницей в то лето, этот лист сразу планировался эскизом будущей живописной картины. Это чувствуется прежде всего в четко построенной композиции. Рисунок демонстративно разделен на отдельные планы: на переднем – вода и причаленная к берегу лодка, на среднем – фигурка прачки, прибрежные холмики и развесистое дерево справа, на заднем – окруженный плотной массой деревьев двухэтажный дом. В картине, написанной в том же году, композиция повторена почти буквально. Исключено только дерево в левой части рисунка: дом отделен от левого края полотна лишь неширокой полосой зелени.

В карандашном эскизе художница наметила и будущее декоративное решение картины. Это видно по трактовке воды с зигзагообразными штрихами, изображающими волны. То же стремление к декоративности присутствует в дробном ажурном рисунке, обозначающем кроны деревьев. Рисунок лег в основу картины «Пейзаж с красным домом и прачкой» 1908 года (частное собрание, Москва). При переработке карандашного эскиза в живописное полотно автору пришлось отказаться от мотива волнения воды в пруду на переднем плане. Зато над деревьями в глубине она написала небо с проплывающей по нему чередой белых округлых облаков. Общее декоративное решение живописного варианта построено на контрасте красного цвета дома с белыми оконными рамами и ярко-зеленого окружения.
