  1. 1932

    The first Whitney Annual

    In 1932 Hopper takes part in the first Whitney Annual and exhibits in every annual there for the rest of his life.

  2. 1933

    His first large retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art

    In 1933 the Museum of Modern Art gives Hopper his first large-scale retrospective; it brings him huge success and worldwide fame, and after it he is accepted into the National Academy of Design.

  3. 1937–1938

    Vermont: watercolours on the White River

    In the summers of 1937 and 1938 the couple spends extended sojourns at Wagon Wheels Farm in South Royalton, Vermont, where Hopper paints a series of watercolours along the White River, mostly “pure” landscapes without architecture or human figures; the best known is “First Branch of the White River” (1938).
