Grand prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale
In 1962 Giacometti was awarded the grand prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale, which brought him worldwide fame. Even after reaching popularity he went on reworking his models, often destroying them or setting them aside to return to years later.

Exhibition at MoMA: a trip to the United States
Despite his declining health, in 1965 Giacometti travelled to the United States for an exhibition of his work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Dies at the cantonal hospital in Chur
He died of heart disease (pericarditis) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; his body was returned to Borgonovo and interred close to his parents. His last work was the text he prepared for the book Paris sans fin, a sequence of 150 lithographs containing memories of all the places where he had lived.
