Заграничное путешествие Шишкина способствовало приобретению важ­ных профессиональных навыков и формированию обостренного восприятия национальных особенностей родной природы. Деревенский пейзаж и кресть­янский быт пореформенной России занимают важное место в творчестве жи­вописца. Простота и «неказистость» описательных сельских сюжетов харак­теризуют произведения « Бревна. Деревня Константиновка близ Красного села » (1868(9?), Ж-2812) и «Деревенский двор» (Ж-7707). Они отражают новую худо­жественную эстетику, суть которой лаконично сформулировал в одном из своих писем Павел Третьяков: «Мне не нужно ни богатой природы, ни вели­колепной композиции, ни эффектного освещения, никаких чудес, дайте мне хоть лужу грязную, да чтобы в ней правда была, поэзия…».

    Trips to Valaam

    In the years following Dubki he traveled with Gine and Dzhogin to Valaam Island on Lake Ladoga; these trips honed his skill in rendering nature precisely with brush and pencil.

  3. 1861

    Academy Fellowship Abroad: Munich

    As a stipendiary of the Academy he went to Munich, where he visited the studios of the popular animal painters, the brothers Benno and Franz Adam.

  4. 1865

    Title of Academician

    For "View in the Environs of Düsseldorf," painted in Düsseldorf on commission from the collector N. Bykov, the Imperial Academy of Arts conferred on Shishkin the title of academician.

  5. 1867

    World's Fair in Paris

    At the 1867 Exposition Universelle he showed several drawings and the painting "View in the Environs of Düsseldorf."

  6. 1871

    "Pine Forest" at the 1st Peredvizhniki Exhibition

    The painting "Pine Forest. Mast-Timber Forest in Vyatka Province" was shown at the 1st Peredvizhniki exhibition in St. Petersburg, drew uniformly favorable reviews, and attracted the attention of Pavel Tretyakov; in March 1872 it won first prize in the competition of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts.
