In the life of Angelica Kauffmann

The whole life
  1. 1769–1782

An annual exhibitor at the Royal Academy

From 1769 until 1782 Kauffman exhibited at the Royal Academy every year, sometimes sending as many as seven pictures, generally on classical or allegorical subjects.

  2. 1770s

    Engravers reproduce her pictures

At the same time Kauffman began to work with engravers who copied her pictures for wide distribution, and she became a commercially successful artist.

  3. 1781

    Returns to Rome

Disappointed by the relative apathy of the British towards history painting, Kauffman left London, where she had lived for fifteen years, in 1781, after her marriage to Antonio Zucchi, and returned to Rome, where that genre was better known and enjoyed the patronage of patrons and collectors.

  4. 1781

    Married: Antonio Zucchi

  5. after 1781

    Befriends Goethe in Rome

In Rome Kauffman befriended, among others, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

  6. 1782

Her father, Joseph Johann Kauffmann, dies

In 1782 Angelica’s father, Joseph Johann Kauffmann (1707–1782), died; he was her first teacher of painting, and she had worked and travelled with him through Switzerland, Austria and Italy.
