  1. January 1898

    First trip to Rome, turn to neoclassicism

    He visited Rome for the first time, where the works of Raphael and Michelangelo in the Vatican made a deep impression on him; on his return he reoriented his art toward neoclassicism.

  2. 1899

    Exhibition at Durand-Ruel's and the breakup of the Nabis

    Tensions among the Nabis came to a head at the exhibition at Durand-Ruel's gallery; from then on each went his own way in art, while remaining on friendly terms.

  3. 1903

    Journey with Sérusier to Germany and Beuron

    With Sérusier he traveled to Germany and the monastery of Beuron, where they studied the Benedictines' art founded on geometry and "sacred measures."

  4. 1908

    Morozov's commission: "The Story of Psyche" panels

    He began a major decorative project for the Russian collector Ivan Morozov — the "Story of Psyche" panels for the music salon of his Moscow mansion; the cycle is now in the Hermitage.
