Dit is een foto van de Slurfterdam op de Maasvlakte. De Maasvlakte is een haven- en industriegebied, ontstaan door afdamming en opspuiting van een ondiepte voor de kust van Rotterdam, in de provincie Zuid-Holland. Deze vlakte is in 1966 ontstaan. De naam Slurfterdam is een verwijzing naar het woord slurfter. Een slurfter is een stroomgeul die in een zandbank voor de kust gevormd is. Als de zandbank naar de kust is verschoven en tot strand is geworden, zegt men dat de slurfter 'verheeld' is. Als er zich op de verheelde zandbank een duinenrij heeft gevormd en de zee toch nog toegang heeft tot de vlakte achter deze duinenrij, dan blijft de slurfter gehandhaafd. Een voorbeeld van zo'n gehandhaafde slurftervlakte vind men op het Noord-Hollandse eiland Texel.
