A la izquierda del papel, figura masculina vista de espaldas ligeramente girada. Está sentado sobre algún asiento bajo, de forma que apoya uno de sus brazos en la rodilla. Frente a él, a la izquierda y vista de perfil, una mujer, parece que sentada en el suelo, cosiendo una red o una vela que se despliega por toda la zona inferior del dibujo. La mujer se cubre la cabeza con un pañuelo. Tras ella una pared y a la izquierda un pilar, y entre ambos, un madero horizontal del que cuelgan plantas o quizás redes ya terminadas de coser. A la izquierda del papel, grupo de tres figuras: a la derecha una mujer de perfil sentada en una silla baja y frente a ella, dos figuras muy poco definidas en las que se ha insistido el perfil, y que dirigen su mirada a la mujer, como conversando con ella. El reverso ha sido cubierto con lápiz para resaltar el dibujo del anverso.

    Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons

    The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

    “A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid

    Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
