About the painting

This painting of a steam engine and others like it earned Grossberg a reputation as Germany’s leading artist of industrial subjects in the 1930s. The engine’s meticulous detail and smooth execu-tion typify New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), a modernist revival of realist art and literature contemporary with the American Precisionist movement, exemplified by Charles Sheeler’s painting Upper Deck displayed nearby. In Com-position with Turbine, the engine’s featureless and deserted setting counterbalances its realism and evokes the geometric abstract art popularized at the Bauhaus, the German school of art and design where Grossberg studied from 1919 to 1921.
