About the sculpture

Here Christ is on his knees beneath the Cross, which is partly supported by two men. He wears a crown of thorns which contains small nails. On the right a hunchbacked figure crouches in a mocking pose, and on the left are two others, on a smaller scale. In the background are the figures of St John and the Virgin before the walls of Jerusalem.

This relief was originally part of a Passion altarpiece. It would have been on the left of the principal scene of the Crucifixion.
