Photo essay “The Restraints: Open and Hidden”
Life publishes his photo essay on the effects of racial segregation, following the everyday lives of three families — the Thorntons, Causeys and Tanners — in and near Mobile, Alabama. Instead of demonstrations, boycotts and brutality, he emphasises the prosaic details of their lives.
