The role of “friend of the King”
Around 1750, on her doctors' advice, the marquise stops spending nights in the King's bedroom and their relationship becomes platonic; to keep her influence she takes on the role of “friend of the King” and announces it through art, commissioning from Jean-Baptiste Pigalle a sculpture of herself as Friendship.

Pompadour patronizes sculptors and portrait painters, among them the court artist Jean-Marc Nattier and, in the 1750s, François Boucher, Jean-Baptiste Réveillon and François-Hubert Drouais, and makes Paris the perceived capital of taste and culture in Europe.
