Axel Natanael Hilleström Johnsson was a Swedish landscape painter whose work focused primarily on coastal environments, particularly the west coast archipelago. Probably self-taught, he was part of a late 19th- and early 20th-century Scandinavian artistic movement that focused on the production of romantic landscapes celebrating the beauty of The North. Through vivid use of color modulated by subtle tonal shifts, Hilleström’s watercolor achieved depth and luminosity.
