In the life of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg

The whole life
  1. 1797–1800

Trains under Jes Jessen in Aabenraa

After his confirmation he begins training as a painter under the church and portrait painter Jes Jessen of Aabenraa.

  2. May 1800

    Apprentice in Flensburg

At seventeen he continues his training under Josiah Jacob Jessen in Flensburg, where he becomes an apprentice in May 1800, while setting his sights on the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen.

  3. 23 May 1803

Arrives in Copenhagen and enters the Academy

Having saved some money and received help from local well-wishers, he arrives in Copenhagen on 23 May 1803; the same year he is admitted to the Academy free of charge, where he studies, among others, with Nikolaj Abraham Abildgaard.

  4. 1803–1809

    Progress and friction with Abildgaard

He makes good progress painting historical pictures, portraits and landscapes, but friction with Abildgaard impedes his advancement; to earn a living he works as a hand labourer and makes drawings for copperplate etchings. A self-portrait from 1803 survives from these years.
