Meanwhile, in the life of Carl Andre

The whole life
  1. 1970

Solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum

His solo exhibition takes place at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; “37 Pieces of Work”, which lies flat on the floor, is shown there for the first time.

  2. 1972

    Tate buys “Equivalent VIII”

Britain’s Tate Gallery acquires “Equivalent VIII”, an arrangement of 120 firebricks.

  3. 1973

“Quincy Book”: photographs of his home town

His artist’s book “Quincy Book”, with commissioned photographs of landscapes and monuments in his native Quincy, appears alongside his solo show at the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover. It was reprinted in 2014.

  4. 1976

The “bricks controversy” over “Equivalent VIII”

After an article in The Sunday Times, the work that the Tate had shown several times without incident becomes the centre of a scandal and is later defaced with blue food dye; the “bricks controversy” becomes one of the most famous British debates about contemporary art.

  5. 24 June 1977 – 2 October 1977

    Exhibition: Documenta 6
