About the work

This scene appears to reflect Thomas Wijk's sojourn in Naples, 1640-42. The Bay of Naples is surrounded by impressive uplands such as we see in the nackground of this scene. Long ago, the tower would have served to protect this inlet from invaders, but times seem more peaceful now as fishermen go about there daily work.
