Jan van Boeckhorst, a Flemish Baroque painter, was born in Münster in 1604 and trained under Peter Paul Rubens. He was a member of the Bentvueghels worked in Antwerp and died there in 1668. Some 50 of his works are in museums, from the Hermitage and Lille to Vienna and the Getty, and three are on view. His subjects are biblical, mythological and pastoral: an oil sketch for The Martyrdom of Saint Stephen, The Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, Esther before Ahasuerus, The Horses of Achilles and a pastoral scene perhaps showing Jacob and Rachel.
