    Rubens becomes his “secretary” with Borromeo

    From October 1610 Rubens acted as his friend's intermediary with Cardinal Borromeo: by 1625 he had written some 25 letters to the cardinal on Brueghel's behalf, and Brueghel jokingly called him 'mio secretario Rubens', 'my secretary Rubens'.

    A diplomatic mission to Holland with Rubens

    Brueghel accompanied Rubens and Hendrick van Balen the Elder on a diplomatic mission to the Dutch Republic; in Haarlem they met Hendrick Goltzius and other local artists. He may also have met Esaias van de Velde and Willem Buytewech there, both of whom knew his river views.

    The city presents four of his paintings to the Archdukes

    Brueghel received many official commissions from the Antwerp magistrate; on this day the city fathers presented four of his paintings to the Archdukes Albert and Isabella.
