Im Leben von Cosmè Tura

Das ganze Leben
  1. from the mid-1480s

His last decade: no commissions, poverty, illness

Tura's documented activity ends in the mid-1480s, and there is no evidence that he received any major commissions in the last ten years of his life; his style falls out of fashion, and at the Este court his place is taken by Ercole de' Roberti. He faces illness and want.

  2. 1486

Ercole de' Roberti takes his place

In 1486 the post of court portraitist to the Este passes to the younger Ercole de' Roberti.

  3. 1490

A letter to Duke Ercole asking to be paid

He asks Duke Ercole to pay for one of his works — perhaps the St Anthony of Padua now in the Galleria Estense in Modena — and writes that he does not know how to live and survive, finding neither work nor the means to support his family and himself.
