Im Leben von Franz Xaver Winterhalter

Das ganze Leben
  1. 20. April 1805

    Born

  2. 1828

Drawing master at the court in Karlsruhe

He enters the service of Sophie, Margravine of Baden, as her drawing master — his first entry into court circles.

  3. 1836

Salon of 1836: “Il dolce Farniente”

Having left Baden for France, he draws the public’s notice with the genre scene “Il dolce Farniente”. The critics who praised this debut later turned away from him as an artist who could not be taken seriously.

  4. 1842

    First journey to England

He visits England for the first time and returns several times to paint Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their growing family: at least 120 works were made for them, most of them now in the Royal Collection. He had been in demand at the British court since 1841.

  5. 1855

“Empress Eugénie” at the Exposition Universelle

The painting is acclaimed and shown at the Exposition Universelle. The marked similarity of its composition to “Florinda” gave rise to scandalous gossip that the Empress and her ladies had posed déshabillé for the earlier painting.
