Caricatures for Vanity Fair as “Coïdé”
From 1869 to 1873 Tissot drew for Thomas Gibson Bowles's magazine Vanity Fair under the pseudonym Coïdé; before the war he contributed to the series “Sovereigns”, lampooning Napoleon III, Alexander II and Wilhelm I and depicting the latter two as bloodthirsty conquerors.

War and the Commune
In the Franco-Prussian War Tissot took part in the improvised defence of Paris, first in two companies of the National Guard and later with the Paris Commune, which he is believed to have joined only to protect his belongings rather than out of shared ideology.
