Для полотен Н. Гончаровой 1908–1909-х характерна работа большими, плотными цветовыми пятнами, что заставляет вспомнить о непосредственной причастности Гончаровой к организации первой выставки «Бубновый валет», ее близости к отечественному примитивизму и французскому фовизму. Но любые заимствования, связанные с разработкой важного для художницы пластического мотива, оказываются сплавленными с ее собственным живописным и экспрессивным темпераментом, не лишенным некой интриги. Она принадлежала к поколению мастеров, формирующих эстетику нового века. Крепкие фигуры борцов занимают весь холст, они с трудом вмещаются в пространство картины, создавая впечатление мощной избыточной силы. Полотно с одноименным названием, созданное художницей в это же время, хранится в Музее современного искусства (Центре им. Ж. Помпиду), в Париже (Дар МК СССР).

Gauguin retrospective and a turn to Fauvism
From 1906 Goncharova devoted herself ever more to painting: in Paris she saw the Paul Gauguin retrospective and took up Fauvism, leaving Impressionism behind, and soon tried Cubism and Primitivism.
1909
First stage work: “The Marriage of Zobeide”
Goncharova designed the sets and costumes for Hugo von Hofmannsthal's “The Marriage of Zobeide” at Konstantin Krakht's private studio; at the same time she decorated sculptural friezes for Moscow mansions and designed wallpaper.

First solo show and a charge of pornography
At the club of the Society of Free Aesthetics Goncharova showed 22 paintings for a single day; after an anonymous notice in the newspaper “Golos Moskvy” the police seized two “Models” and the painting “God”, and she was charged with pornography.
December 1910 – January 1911
First Jack of Diamonds exhibition
The first show of the Jack of Diamonds — Moscow's first radical independent exhibiting group, named by Larionov — included Goncharova's Primitivist and Cubist paintings.

Develops Rayonism with Larionov
Goncharova and Larionov developed Rayonism and painted many works in the style (elsewhere Rayonism is dated 1912–1914).
