Following Heckel, he enrols in architecture at the technical university in Dresden in 1905 but gives it up after one term; Heckel introduces him to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Fritz Bleyl. Passionately sharing the same artistic interests, they use architecture as a front to study art.
