In Brussels his paintings were much sought after, with patrons including wealthy Flemish collectors and Cardinal Granvelle, in effect the Habsburg chief minister, who was based in Mechelen.

A son, Pieter, was born — the future Pieter Brueghel the Younger; the father died when both sons were very small, and their grandmother Mayken Verhulst trained them.

A second son, Jan, was born — the future Jan Brueghel the Elder, an important figure in the transition to Flemish Baroque painting; the father died too early to train either son.

Tells his wife to burn sharp drawings
According to van Mander, before he died he told his wife to burn drawings carrying inscriptions that were “too sharp or sarcastic,” either out of remorse or for fear she might be held responsible; this has led to speculation that they were politically or doctrinally provocative.
