From 1918 to 1943 he lives in Berlin and travels to the Baltic Sea every year, working a great deal there.
1933
Forced out of the Prussian Academy of Arts
After the Nazis come to power he is forced to resign in 1933 (other accounts say he was expelled from the academy two years after his admission); the rewards and honours he had received after the First World War are stripped from him.
1936
70 watercolours at the Möller gallery during the Olympics
His works remain in museums until the 1936 Olympic Games, during which 70 of his watercolours are shown at the Ferdinand Möller Galerie.

Exhibition at the Westermann Gallery in New York
The same year he exhibits at the Westermann Gallery in New York.
1937
608 works seized; “Degenerate Art”
The Nazis seize 608 of his works from German museums (other accounts say by 1938); 25 paintings, 24 drawings and 2 watercolours end up in July 1937 at the Munich exhibition “Degenerate Art”. Like Barlach or Nolde, he nonetheless goes on showing some works at the so-called “production exhibitions” held under the patronage of the German Labour Front.
