Moves to Paris
Because of the controversy and other negative Dutch reactions to CoBrA, Appel moved to Paris. From there he built an international reputation, traveling to Mexico, the United States, Yugoslavia, Brazil, Japan and China; he also lived in New York and Florence.

Leaves CoBrA and joins Art Informel
Appel left CoBrA and joined the French Art Informel movement.
1954
First American show, at the Martha Jackson Gallery
Appel's first American gallery exhibition was held at the Martha Jackson Gallery. In America he also painted portraits of prominent jazz musicians, among them Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.

Prize at the Venice Biennale
Appel won a prize at the Venice Biennale and, the same year, the International Prize for graphic art at the Ljubljana Biennial.
