George Romney当时的生活

完整生平
  1. 1763

“The Death of General Wolfe” at the Society of Arts competition

His painting “The Death of General Wolfe”, entered in the Royal Society of Arts competition, is, according to Romney’s friends, awarded second prize of 50 guineas; the sum is later reduced to 25 guineas on questionable grounds.

  2. 1763

    Romney’s daughter dies

In 1763 the daughter with whom he parted when he set out for London dies.

  3. 1763

    A lifelong dislike of Reynolds

It is said that Sir Joshua Reynolds himself was the prime mover behind the reduction of the prize, which may account for the two men’s aversion to each other for the rest of their lives.

  4. 1764

    A few weeks in Paris

With his friend, the lawyer Thomas Greene, he travels to Paris to study the old masters: travel abroad is seen as a requisite of an artist’s training, and London offers very little chance to see great art.

  5. 1765

Second prize from the Society of Arts again

In 1765 he again wins the second prize of 50 guineas in the Society of Arts competition.
