完整生平
  1. 1660s

    Moves to Edo

His first works were designs for embroidery; in Edo he studies both Tosa and Kanō painting, and then turns to ukiyo-e, which he learns from his mentor, the Kanbun Master. The skills he had likely picked up from his father’s craft, together with his academic training, served him well in ukiyo-e.

  2. by the mid-1670s

    The foremost ukiyo-e printmaker

By the mid-1670s Moronobu had already become the most important ukiyo-e printmaker, a position he kept until his death.

  3. 1685

    “Kokon Bushidō ezukushi” is published

The ukiyo-e book “Kokon Bushidō ezukushi” (“Images of Bushidō Through the Ages”) is published, with heroic popular tales of samurai warriors and a simple description for each picture. The word “bushido” in the title and its young readers show that the idea had spread among the general population.

  4. 25 July 1694

    Death

Hishikawa Moronobu dies on 25 July 1694; he left behind more than 100 sets of illustrations, perhaps as many as 150, around 20 of them of an erotic nature.
