Friendship with Vittoria Colonna
In Rome Michelangelo met the poet Vittoria Colonna, a noble widow, then forty-seven. They shared a sincere platonic love, exchanging sonnets on spiritual matters, and in the 1530s she was his spiritual guide.

A letter on the envy of Bramante and Raphael
In a letter Michelangelo blamed the tensions between himself and Julius II on the envy of Bramante and Raphael, saying of the latter: “all he had in art, he got from me”.
