Anverso: Madre e hija. Madre e hija sentadas ante una mesa, de frente. A la izquierda, la madre se acoda con su brazo derecho sobre la mesa mientras se inclina hacia la joven, que está leyendo o escribiendo. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el anverso del nº Inv. 12887. Reverso: Pescadoras en la playa e inscripción. Apunte breve a lápiz de un grupo de mujeres sentadas en la playa, con una o dos barcas al fondo a la izquierda. Girando el papel 90º, anotación manuscrita de Sorolla a carboncillo. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el reverso del nº Inv. 12889.

Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
