Возможно, на картине изображена столовая в доме семьи Бенуа, почти все члены которой имели отношение к искусству, на Никольской ул. 15 в Петербурге. В воспоминаниях художник писал об обоях в столовой: « этот синий цвет веселил глаз и придавал комнате какой-то прелестный старосветский характер Позже в каждой квартире, которую мы с женой снимали, непременно одна из комнат получала именно ярко-синюю оклейку. От нас даже пошла в Петербурге 1900-х годов мода на такие синие комнаты, самый же цвет получил в шутку название „Bleu Benois" (Синий Бенуа)». Following the Tauride exhibition of 1905, he organizes the “Russian Art Exhibition” in Paris together with Diaghilev and Bakst — an undertaking from which the theatrical Russian Seasons abroad will grow.
