NBC commission: comedians in mid-air
NBC commissions him to photograph popular comedians of the day — Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Groucho Marx and Bob Hope. Photographing their acts, he captures many of them jumping in mid-air, which inspires many later jump pictures of celebrities, from the Ford family and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to Marilyn Monroe, María Félix and Richard Nixon.
1952
Photographs John F. Kennedy twice
John F. Kennedy sits twice for Halsman. A photograph from the first sitting appears on the jacket of the original edition of Kennedy’s book “Profiles in Courage”; one from the second is used in his senatorial campaign.

Named among the world’s ten greatest photographers
Popular Photography magazine lists him among the “World’s Ten Greatest Photographers”.

Publishes “Philippe Halsman’s Jump Book”
The book contains a tongue-in-cheek discussion of “jumpology” and 178 photographs of celebrity jumpers. This is the name he gave to his philosophy of jump photography: when you ask a person to jump, his attention goes to the act of jumping, the mask falls, and the real person appears.
