完整生平
  1. 1940s

Turns from Surrealism to a manner of his own

By the early 1940s Balthus has finally left the principles of Surrealism behind; his attention is drawn to the theme of awakening femininity, and symbolic motifs — a mirror, a butterfly, a cat — and adolescent girls in domestic settings begin to appear in his canvases.

  2. 1945

Moves to Geneva and befriends Skira and Malraux

Balthus moves from Bern to Geneva, where he becomes a friend of the publisher Albert Skira and of André Malraux, a writer and member of the French Resistance.

  3. 1946

    Returns to France

In 1946 Balthus returns to France after several years in Switzerland.

  4. 1947

Travels to the south of France with André Masson

Travelling with André Masson, Balthus meets figures such as Picasso and Jacques Lacan, who will eventually become a collector of his work.

  5. 1948

Designs “The State of Siege” at Camus’s request

His friend Albert Camus asks him to design the sets and costumes for his play L’État de siège (The State of Siege), directed by Jean-Louis Barrault.
