Forrest Bess painted Number 40 in 1949; the small oil is at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Its curved line, crossed by short marks, resembles a scar. Bess drew on visions for the signs that populate his paintings. Including its wooden frame, this work measures only 26.7 by 34.3 cm.
