His second wife Amalie dies in childbirth
Amalie von Bassewitz, his student, whom he had married in January, also dies in childbirth. Dahl is crushed and many months pass before he can paint again; some years later the youngest child dies too, leaving Siegwald and Caroline as his two surviving children.

Further trips to Norway: 1834, 1839, 1844
Dahl travels to Norway again in 1834, then in 1839 and 1844, mostly exploring and painting the mountains. On these visits he receives an enthusiastic welcome as a painter of renown.
