Tablo hakkında
John Sloan watched this laundry scene from his Manhattan apartment’s rear window before painting A Woman’s Work in 1912, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. A woman balances on a narrow fire escape, hanging freshly washed clothes on lines between tenement buildings. Sloan’s journalistic training fed his attention to social questions and ordinary routines among working-class city residents. The scene records domestic labour, the sphere to which American women’s work was often restricted around 1900. On view in gallery 208, American Gilded Age and Realism.
Müzenin anlatımıyla
Trained as a journalist, the young Sloan explored social issues more vigorously than most of the painters of his time, portraying working-class urbanites engaged in ordinary activities. He observed this particular scene through a rear window of his Manhattan apartment. Perched on a narrow fire escape, a woman hangs fresh laundry to dry on clotheslines strung between tenements. As evidenced by the painting, the labors of American women at the turn of the 1900s were most often confined to the domestic realm.
