Leaves Germany to travel the world
In 1991, after twenty years of work in the Odenwald, Kiefer left Germany to travel the world — to India, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and the United States.

Exhibition at the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin
The Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin organised a comprehensive solo exhibition of Kiefer's work.
1992
Moves to France, to Barjac
In 1992 Kiefer settled in Barjac, France, leaving his first wife and children in Germany. He turned La Ribaute, a derelict silk factory on 35 hectares, into a studio Gesamtkunstwerk of glass buildings, archives, underground chambers and corridors. Other accounts date his life in France from 1993.
1993
A white dinner in New York
Kiefer and his second wife, Renate Graf, shocked the art world once more: for a handful of art-world guests, Sherrie Levine among them, they draped a New York loft in white muslin, hung skinned animals on hooks, carpeted the floor with white sand, hired waiters dressed as mimes and served mostly white organ meats; Anohni sang for the guests.
