Om målningen
The Willows, painted by Claude Monet in 1880, is a rural landscape in Washington's National Gallery of Art. The oil canvas measures 66.68 by 81.92 cm. Cahuzac bought it from Monet in November of the year it was painted. It later entered Edward C. and Mary Walker's collection and was bequeathed to the Corcoran in 1937. It is currently off display.

Death of Camille
The artist's wife Camille Doncieux died at Vétheuil; Monet painted her posthumous portrait. Her death, along with financial difficulties, weighed heavily on the artist.

Durand-Ruel resumes purchases
Durand-Ruel offered to handle the buying and selling of Monet's works on a permanent basis, after which the artist's fortunes rapidly improved.
