Om verket
Rembrandt made Saint Jerome in a Dark Chamber in 1642, depicting the saint bent over an open book. This impression is held in Washington by the National Gallery of Art. Light enters through a divided window beside the shadowed interior. Etched lines are supplemented by drypoint and engraving, printed on laid paper. It belonged to Rosenwald before his gift in 1943.

Death of Saskia
Saskia died in 1642, probably of tuberculosis, a year after Titus's birth. Rembrandt's drawings of her on her sickbed are among his most deeply felt works.
