Om målningen
Strong shadows meet bright pavement in Johan Barthold Jongkind's Rue Notre-Dame, Paris (1866), in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. That summer he turned from the Normandy harbor views that had established his reputation to the rebuilding and growth of the capital. Pale colors and rapid, loose strokes describe the play of sunlight across this street. The subject belongs to a changing modern city, while the newly sunny palette marks a shift in his painting. Both the contemporary subject matter and this light-filled manner were later adopted by Impressionists. On view in room 1.18.
Med museets egna ord
After having gained a reputation with his harbour scenes along the coast of Normandy, Jongkind turned in the summer of 1866 to other subject matter – the reconstruction and expansion of Paris. In this street scene, he concentrated on the play of brilliant sunlight and powerful shadows, using light tints and swift, loose brushstrokes. This new, sunny tonality and modern subject matter were later taken up by the Impressionists.
