Om verket

Pierre Roche made Prometheus seem carved out of the rock behind him in Prometheus, an early-twentieth-century print in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. Better known as a sculptor and ceramicist, Roche sought a print process with physical depth and experimented with relief-printed gypsographs. Below the punished mythological figure, he created the appearance of clear water and reflected forms. Raised printing allowed the image to draw on his sculptural interests while the lower part presents water as transparent rather than as solid rock.

Med museets egna ord

Since Roche was primarily a sculptor and ceramist, he sought a more three-dimensional printmaking technique and experimented with the gypsograph, which is printed in relief. The figure of Prometheus (a Greek mythological figure punished by Zeus) appears to have been carved from the rocky outcropping behind it. At the same time, Roche created the effect of transparent water and reflection in the lower portion of the composition.
